Where is Your Head and Your Heart Today?
Creating your own love story
In yoga this week, our theme is all about LOVE
(even if you don't do yoga...stay with me!)
...actually, it is always about love when it comes to yoga.
And to life.
(not just a commercial lovefest once a year on Valentines Day)
If we don’t cultivate a foundation of love then we won’t ever develop
awareness and compassion.
Sometimes we find it easier to give than to turn our attention to ourselves.
And that feels REALLLLY good.
This translates off the mat into doing things that are good for our own body, that nourish us well.
Not just for an hour a week. But in the real world.
If we don’t love ourselves enough, or think we are
worthy of kindness and goodness, we will:
- push too hard in whatever form of physical exercise we choose to do
- commit to over scheduling
- ruminate over thoughts in our head, making our inner world as volatile as our external world
- Feed ourselves crap
It’s not good
This is an edited version of a piece I read in class last week:
I am so tired of how hard we are on ourselves. Not attractive enough, not smart enough, not cool enough, not purpose-full enough, not creative enough, not rich enough, not wise enough....blah blah blah. It's like a collective shame-fest that begins when we are born and continues until we are dead. Billions of us walking around convinced we are not something enough. Methinks we are missing the point. Just being alive on this mad planet demands that we are enough.
How about if we begin every day with an
'I am enough'
Whatever you bring to your world is enough. It has to be.
That's what you've got.
Whatever body you bring to your yoga class is enough.
Don’t let a few creaky bones, inflexible muscles, and the perception of too much to do stop you from coming.
Once we get to class we modify, and we harmonise.
I love when students leave class happier and contented than when they walked in, more than cracking a great handstand.
Having worked the body, we quiet the mind and we soothe the soul.
And that is great way to move off the mat and into our world.
In pondering the very top quote...
I hope your head and your heart spends a little bit of time with YOU today...and everyday.
Make good choices for YOU.
So that you are not just in survival mode, but you thrive in your world.
Feed Yourself Well
Here is a little something to infuse your cells with goodness:
The hardest thing is the chopping.
Add grilled haloumi and some simply dressed rocket.
Or serve as a side to grilled chicken or fish.
a punnet of colourful red/orange/yellow tomatoes
2 vine tomatoes
1-2 red peppers
a red onion
the seeds from a pomegranate
some herbs - I used parsley and coriander
a couple of chopped garlic cloves
3 tblspns olive oil
a squeeze of half a lemon
all ingredients together
add 1/2 teaspoon of Sumac to the dressing ingredients
(This is a spice that goes fabulously with tomatoes, on salads, roast potatoes...)
a drizzle of pomegranate molasses
Feed Your Soul
Until next time...
Oh and what the heck -
Happy Valentines Day y'all
